# Fold Symmetry (Simetri Lipat) and Fraction (Pecahan)

Classroom Observation in SD Xaverius 1 Palembang (Second Report)

The second classroom observation in SD Xaverius 1 was performed in May 27, 2010. In this observation I and my friend observed the fourth grade that taught by Mr Wasis, namely IVB class and IVD class.

The Result of Observation in IVB Class

In this class, Mr Wasis taught about Fold Symmetry. In that time this subject ever taught by him, so he just reviewed the material and gave some tasks for his students. The time to teach it was just 35 minutes. He started his lesson by asking her student to guess the shape of a kite (layang-layang) and a field. Most of students ever played a kite in the field, so they could determine the shape of them well. Mr Wasis continued their lesson by determining the fold symmetry of some geometry planes. When Mr Wasis asked how many fold symmetry of square, his students answered “four”. When he asked how many fold symmetry of isosceles triangle, his students answered “one”. After the students got enough understanding about fold symmetry of some geometry planes, they were asked to draw ten geometry planes and determined how many fold symmetry of them. Here are some results of the students’ activities:

Most of the students in this class could draw at least ten geometry planes and could determine how many fold symmetry of each of them in sort time.

The Result of Observation in IVD Class

In this class the students looked so enthusiasm to accept the material that would be given. It was shown since the beginning Mr Wasis entered the class. The class would take place around 35 minutes.  In that time Mr Wasis taught about Fraction. This subject was ever taught to the students in that class. Mr Wasis reviewed about that subject by giving some questions related fraction. At first, he called one of students to stand in front of class. Then he explained that fraction also could be involved with the clothes used by the student. He explained that the shirt could be like numerator and the shorts like denominator. From this simple example the students looked interested and could easily understand about fraction.

The class was continued by giving some questions using fraction operation. Mr Wasis supported his students to solve the questions. Here some activities of students when they solved questions related to fraction operation.

First Question

This question could be solved well by a student l. The others students also could solve it.

Second Question

This second question also could be solved well by a student and the other students. Then, from this question Mr Wasis asked the students to make the answer of that question simpler. In this case, some students got difficulties to solve it. Here some of results how they tried to solve it:

After some times, finally there was a student that can solve it well.

In this class Mr. Wasis also asked to each of the student that could answer the questions about how they got it. Thus, from here other students also could understand it. Before he finished his lesson, he had given homework to the students. Some of the students immediately solved it in the class.
