Classroom Observation in SD Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang (Fourth Report)

INTRODUCTION

The fourth observation in SD Muhammadiyah I was performed on September 30, 2010. In this observation I and my friend implemented one of games related to multiplication from Rekenweb (one of webs for Elementary students in the Netherlands). The game from Rekenweb was converted into paper in order to make students can use it. This was because there was no internet access in SD Muhammadiyah 1. Although without using internet immediately, the paper based game that was implemented in the teaching of multiplication was hoped could reach goal of this observation.

GOAL

To know whether using one of games related to multiplication from Rekenweb can help the students understand concept of multiplication.

OBSERVATION QUESTION

Does game related to multiplication from Rekenweb help the students to understand concept of multiplication?

DATA DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS

This is game from Rekenweb that has been converted into paper based game. This game is called “Make Five”.

After the students collected their answers, they were asked to answer some questions in front of class. Here were their answers.

From the result, most of students could understand concept of multiplication from 1 until 10. Although some still there were students who slowly solve the problems. They repeated to solve the problems by seeing other students’ answers. They also could make variation of multiplications to get certain number. So, actually they have known concept of commutative in multiplication. The students also looked active during the class. It was shown by many of them wanted to try in front of class to solve the questions. When other students made mistake, other students corrected it.

CONCLUSION

The game from Rekenweb “Make Five” that had been converted into paper based game, had helped the students in third grade in SD Muhammadiyah I to understand concept of multiplication from 1 until 10. They could make variation answers to get certain value where in this case they had understood concept of commutative in multiplication. In the next observation students will learn about multiplication of two numbers. The student’s understanding in this meeting is hoped will make them be easier to understand concept of multiplication of two numbers.
